While this month highlights the importance of mental health, it&#8217;s important to consider mental health issues throughout the entire year. In light of this, we decided to explore the connection between plants and mental health.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-5cst7\">At Ambius, we strongly believe that surrounding oneself with plants improves mental health. Before proceeding further, here&#8217;s a gentle disclaimer: mental health issues are a serious topic that require guidance from a mental health professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental health problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Raising awareness about mental health involves educating the public and reducing the stigma and discrimination often faced by those with mental illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and job stress are common, and they have a direct impact on workplaces. Increased absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased costs can all be attributed to mental health issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/interior-plants-provide-health-wellbeing-and-productivity-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indoor plants can improve productivity <\/a>and decrease absenteeism, but can they also have a positive impact on mental health? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a deeper look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/benefits-of-indoor-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefits of being surrounded by plants<\/a>, and how plants might be able to assist with common mental health challenges such as low mood and stress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Horticultural therapy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/photo-1611843467160-25afb8df1074.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1732\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahta.org\/horticultural-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Horticultural therapy&#8221;<\/a> (the engagement of a person in\u00a0gardening\u00a0and plant-based activities under the trained eye of a therapist) has been used since the late 19th century. Dr Benjamin Rush, the \u201cfather of American psychiatry,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhelp.com\/advice\/therapy\/horticultural-therapy-and-its-impact-on-mental-health\/\">documented<\/a> the positive effects that working with plants had on patients with mental illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 20th century, horticultural therapy ceased to be exclusively a treatment for mental illness and was embraced by war veterans suffering from PTSD in the 1940s and 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plants and mental health: reducing the symptoms of PTSD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5193293\/\">Studies of veterans<\/a> and victims of natural disasters who participated in horticultural therapies or nature-based rehabilitation programs found that both groups were better able to control symptoms of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/za\/basics\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder\">PTSD<\/a>&nbsp;and developed <strong>more positive states of mind when in nature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"__p45\">Using nature as a safe place was an important part of<strong> lowering the participants\u2019 feeling of alertness.<\/strong> One veteran reported how he felt that nature settings provided so much protection that he could close his eyes, something that he could rarely do in public. Others reported positive impacts on their PTSD symptoms from being in specific nature settings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reducing loneliness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies are also starting to show that plants can help with loneliness. A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/healthiermanchester.org\/ey-up-petal-how-docs-are-prescribing-plants-to-keep-mancs-kale-and-hearty\/\" target=\"_blank\">GP practice in the UK<\/a> is testing this theory by giving pot plants to patients who may be experiencing anxiety, depression or loneliness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients prone to depression or low mood receive a plant to care for, and then bring it back to transfer into a communal garden.This then gives the patient chance to join in with further gardening and social activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plants are mainly herbs &#8211; like lemon balm and catmint &#8211; which all have mindful qualities. Many people believe that caring for something brings numerous benefits, especially for those who may not have a garden or be able to have pets<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr Philippa James, one of the surgery\u2019s GPs,&nbsp;<\/strong>said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ve seen how our patients relax in the garden. There\u2019s a lot of evidence now about how two hours a week in a <strong>green space can lift mood<\/strong> \u2013 and then that too has physical, mental and emotional benefits.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/pexels-gary-barnes-6231653.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1773\" height=\"1182\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/pexels-gary-barnes-6231653.jpeg\" alt=\"Plants can reduce loneliness\" class=\"wp-image-1725\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A Korean study of patients diagnosed with moderate to severe depression compared the effects of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/za\/basics\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\">cognitive-behavioral<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/za\/basics\/therapy\">therapy<\/a>&nbsp;(CBT) performed in a hospital to CBT performed in an arboretum with a forest-like setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arboretum group significantly reduced symptoms of depression and experienced 20% to 30% higher rates of complete remission compared to a typically medicated group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plants can lower anxiety and stress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple small studies have analyzed the relationship between being near indoor plants and lower stress levels. A 2015&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2020\/01\/200102184829.htm\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>&nbsp;in the<em>&nbsp;Journal of Physiological Anthropology<\/em>&nbsp;found that interacting with indoor plants may reduce psychological and physiological stress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.ashs.org\/horttech\/view\/journals\/horttech\/30\/1\/article-p55.xml\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>&nbsp;from Japan concluded that even just gazing at a plant on your work desk may <strong>reduce anxiety levels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/desk-plant.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1993\" height=\"1051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/desk-plant.jpeg\" alt=\"Plants can lower anxiety and stress\" class=\"wp-image-1740\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;width:840px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Multiple small studies have analyzed the relationship between being near indoor plants and lower stress levels.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decreasing stress and fatigue:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-28qca\">In 2011, researchers from Uppsala University (Sweden) and Norwegian University of Life Sciences found that <strong>the simple presence of plants in our environment reduces stress and fatigue, and increases feelings of happiness<\/strong>. Working with plants also helps decrease our<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1359105310365577\" target=\"_blank\"> <strong>cortisol levels<\/strong><\/a> and makes us feel restored and positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/574050\/Effects_of_indoor_foliage_plants_on_subjects_recovery_from_mental_fatigue?auto=download&amp;email_work_card=download-paper\">Japanese study by Seiji Shibata<\/a> from&nbsp;the Department of Human Psychology at Sagami Women\u2019s University concluded that the presence of plants may accelerate the recovery from fatigue in participants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contact Ambius today:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The above example represents just a small sample of the multitude of studies on plants and mental health conducted over the years.
