This is when office workers experience the greatest lack in concentration and drop in productivity. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ways to beat the slump<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Afternoon-slump-junk-food.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2051\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Afternoon-slump-junk-food.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Afternoon-slump-junk-food-300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Common ways to counteract this energy dip may include reaching for that chocolate muffin (sugar hit) or having a large cup of coffee (caffeine hit). Slightly more healthy ways include talking a walk outside (which gives you a vitamin D hit and some fresh air) or trying to have a more balanced lunch of fruit, veggies, whole grains, and fibre (going easy on the carbs which can cause afternoon sleepiness).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, research has found that introducing indoor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/office-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plants into the office<\/a> one can reverse these effects, without having to reach for the coffee and biscuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why do office workers have an \u201cafternoon slump\u201d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the reasons behind the afternoon energy dip is a rise in carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) levels throughout the day.  The primary source of indoor CO<sub>2 <\/sub>is humans. Typical outdoor concentrations are around 380ppm (parts per million) but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.wsu.edu\/Portals\/0\/Documents\/Measuring_CO2_Inside_Buildings-Jan2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this can increase to several thousand <strong>indoors<\/strong><\/a><sup><strong>2<\/strong><\/sup> over the course of one day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst these levels of CO<sub>2<\/sub> are not dangerous to health, they can have an impact on concentration. This was demonstrated by a study conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/indoor-concentrations-of-co2-can-impair-decision-making-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Berkeley National Laboratory showing a correlation between high CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/a> levels and diminished decision making performance, as well as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/poor-indoor-air-affects-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> lower productivity.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does having indoor plants impact performance and productivity?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to stop thinking of plants as only being part of the office d\u00e9cor and just adding aesthetic value to a business. There\u2019s growing recognition of the more tangible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/benefits-of-indoor-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefits of having plants in your workplace<\/a>. This includes the positive effect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/interior-plants-provide-health-wellbeing-and-productivity-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indoor plants can have on concentration and productivity<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Ambius-technician-servicing-plants-.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2060\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Ambius-technician-servicing-plants-.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Ambius-technician-servicing-plants--300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indoor air can be as polluted, and in some case even more polluted than outdoor air &#8211; thanks to high levels of exhalation and office dust; both of which work to increase CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the air. (Read more about common indoor air pollutants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/do-you-recognise-these-5-common-indoor-air-pollutants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plants have been shown to absorb and break down all types of urban air pollutants as well as replenish the levels of oxygen (O<sub>2<\/sub>) in the air through photosynthesis. The result is two complementary ways of refreshing the air; removing CO<sub>2<\/sub> and boosting O<sub>2 <\/sub>levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does the research say?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Research conducted in Sydney by <a href=\"https:\/\/interiorplantscape.asn.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Greening-the-Great-Indoors-for-Human-Health-and-Well-Being-Final-Report-to-HAL-2010.pdf\">Margaret Burchett<\/a> on <em>Greening the Great Indoors for Human Health and Wellbeing<\/em> backs up this theory. Her research showed that in offices with plants, CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels were reduced by 10% in air conditioned buildings and by 25% in non-air conditioned ones, compared to the equivalent offices without plants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels in the building, especially in the afternoon when they have risen naturally, concentration, creativity and performance levels are more likely to increase, allowing employees to be more productive in the office for longer periods of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Creative-alert-employee.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2058\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Creative-alert-employee.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ambius.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Creative-alert-employee-300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Plants are a cost effective solution to improving productivity, and certainly a healthier solution for workers; no more rushes to the biscuit tin or coffee machine to beat that afternoon slump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biophilia: Our innate need for nature<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Working in an office doesn&#8217;t mean we lose our innate need to be &#8216;in&#8217; nature. If anything, we need plants even more in the built environment.
